'Distant Rain' captures the mood and atmosphere of rainclouds over an Icelandic wilderness. The scene was observed and photographed by the artist on a trip to the south coast of Iceland in January 2017 and the work was created from references photos in the studio not long thereafter. The medium is colored pencil on paper. The extended landscape format was chosen to draw attention to a seemingly never ending horizontal plane of mountains and rain-sodden plains. The only sign of human intervention in the landscape is two rows of fenceposts that sit naturally in their surroundings as if they have become part of them. The rich, autumnal colors of the foreground are a comforting contrast to the stark, wintery grandeur of the mountains that Iceland is famed for.
