"BIG BEND" - LAGUNA CANYON - Colored Pencil Drawing
The drawing was created with seven colored pencils on toned paper and took more than 350 hours to complete.
Aptly named for the curve in Laguna Canyon, Big Bend has provided inspiration for Artists for over 100 years. Preserved forever as part of the 17,000-acre Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, this area will continue as a muse for artists, solace for the soul, haven for wildlife as these wild lands celebrate nature on its own terms, beckoning us to gently explore and passionately protect.
Oak seedlings planted by scores of volunteers in 1996 are transforming this site into a native landscape. Within it’s coastal hills and deep canyons- a mix of coastal sage scrub, purple needlegrass, and coastal oak woodland paint nature’s canvas. In the spring, wildflowers paint the hillside in hues of pink, red, yellow and white. By summer the blossoms give way to seeds and later, dried growth that awaits the winter rains.
THE GOLDEN ROAD LURE
In Kizziar’s “Big Bend”, there are gentle sprays of bright yellow reflecting the Spring time field mustard herb growing in Laguna Canyon, which has been a part of Southern California lure. The story tells that Gaspar de Portola brought the seeds from Spain and planted them to mark his trail (El Camino Real) as he led his expedition north from Mexico in 1769 to found the missions in California. The Biblical seeds were said to mark a day’s walk between each mission.
