Although probably best known for its sublime beauty and outstanding natural wonders, Grand Canyon National
Park also hosts a rich Native American cultural history. This painting depicts Woodvin
Yazzy, a Diné (Navajo) dancer, on the eastern edge of the South Rim. Yazzy has performed
for thousands of park visitors during public demonstrations on the stage outside of the Hopi House. I sketched him in a series of 6x8 oils to capture the colors, values and energy of the dance and then combined with a plein air landscape to produce this studio piece.
